Immersion Course on Contemporary Social
Issues: An Introduction
The Immersion Course on Contemporary Social
Issues is a 4-month-long academic course based
on the social sciences conducted by the Social
Science Baha twice every year. The objective of
the Course is to enable Nepali graduates to
intellectually comprehend critical contemporary
issues through an intense exposure to liberal
arts and social sciences as they relate to
Nepali society, thereby providing the
participants with skills to develop as
successful, socially productive professionals.
The immersion course involves an orientation to
sociology and anthropology followed by rigorous
instructions on specific areas chosen from, but
not restricted to, development, economy,
education, ethnicity, gender, history, law,
media, philosophy, politics and technology, and
with a focus on the interface of each of these
fields with society. Finally, a strong research
component gives participants practical exposure
to social research. Each module takes one week
apart from the research module, which is carried
over a period of 6 weeks. The current moderators
