The Agenda of Transformation:
Inclusion in Nepali Democracy

Kathmandu
24-26 April 2003

The international conference ‘The Agenda of Transformation: Inclusion in Nepali Democracy’ was held at the Birendra International Convention Centre, Kathmandu, on 24-26 April, 2003. It was the culmination of preparations that began in November 2002, when a circular inviting papers for the conference was sent out. Following enthusiastic responses from academic circles both from Nepal and abroad, 33 papers were ultimately chosen for the conference. However, as the conference approached, one of the presenters opted out, and so a total of 32 presentations were made at two concurrent sessions spread over three days. There was also a separate paper sent by someone who could not attend the conference personally.

Besides the paper presentations, plenaries were held in the early morning sessions. The first, on 24 April, saw the inauguration of The Mahesh Chandra Regmi Lecture—which the Social Science Baha plans to make an annual event—with Dr Harka Gurung presenting ‘Trident and Thunderbolt: Cultural Dynamics in Nepalese Politics’. The other two plenary sessions were ‘Inclusion and Regional Space’ (25 April) and ‘Women in Nepali Democracy’ (26 April). Details of the conference schedule are attached. On the evening of the 25th, the film Nepal by Toni Hagen was screened in memory of Prof Hagen, who had been planning to attend the conference but passed away just a few days earlier.

An estimated 500 people attended the plenaries and the paper presentations. Of these, 248 registered to attend the concurrent paper presentations. A summary of the paper presentations is also included with this.

The conference was supported jointly by the Embassy of Finland, the Enabling State Programme (ESP), the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Toni Hagen Foundation–Europe.
