Understanding Social Inclusion
and Exclusion:
Theories, Methodologies and Data
Workshop
organized by
Social Science Baha and
Social Inclusion
Research
Fund Secretariat,

3 June, 2006, Kathmandu,
Nepal
Preceded by
Public Lecture by
Dr. Lynn Bennett, Lead Social Scientist,
World Bank
2 June, 2006, Kathmandu, Nepal
The main objective of
the workshop is to review and discuss the concept of
social inclusion and social exclusion, the major
theoretical and methodological approaches to the
study of this topic, internationally as well as in
Nepal, the insights and understanding that have been
gained from the previous studies, the gaps in the
studies (especially for Nepal), and to identify
themes/issues for future research. It is hoped that
the papers presented and the ensuing discussions
will help Nepali researchers and donor agencies
achieve a broader and more sophisticated
understanding of these concepts and that the
researchers will be able to formulate research
proposals that are both more rigorous theoretically
and methodologically as well as more suited for the
Nepalese context.
The workshop will not
be directed primarily towards policy-making and
recommendations but towards understanding the social
fact of social inclusion/exclusion in all its
dimensions in the Nepali context, including its
history, political economy, social structures,
cultures and legal regimes as well as globalisation
and developmental regimes.
