KIMFF 2007 AWARDS

Jury Award – First Place
ARE THERE STILL ANY SHEPHERDS?
Dir. Jorge Pelicano, Portugal 2006

Shepherds

A perfect blend of good cinema and quality research on a subject that generally finds place in academic study and international workshops. The stunning visuals, choice of the protagonist, catchy music, songs with profound lyrics and superbly imaginative editing complements the artful story-telling in the film. We get a profound understanding of the fatigue of those men who are used to the loneliness of the mountains. The filmmakers commitment to the subject and mastery over the cinematic tools have combined well to produce the film that touches the inner chord of the romantic, provides the proverbial food for thought for the intellectual and excellent message recall for others.

Jury Award – Second Place
BECOMING A WOMAN IN ZANSKAR
Dir. Jean-Michel Carillion, France 2007

A beautifully filmed story set in spectacular landscape. It is impressive how the camera manages to remain inconspicuous through the cauldron of emotions as a touching story unfolds through the film, revealing multiple cultural layers in a little-known Himalayan community. The film almost borders the realm of fantasy.

Jury Award – Third Place
THIN ICE
Dir. Hakan Berthas, Sweden 2006

This film, shot primarily with a hand-held camera and devoid of any production thrills, once again proves that size (read budget size) does not matter, or that artful storytelling can compensate for the lack of a big-budget production. The film leaves you with the feeling, “only women should be playing ice hockey anyway.”

Special Jury Mention
BUHRAN
Dir. Ajit Lamichhane & Shreeram Dahal, Nepal 2007

A well-edited script, set in a perfect location, makes a strong impact in this film made with almost no money. Good performances by non-professional actors, deep research makes the subject very compelling. The film explores the typical psyche of tribal people, the continuing significance of feudal class relations, and gender roles in that community. May this film be the first step in the bright future of these young filmmakers.

Best Film – Nepal Panorama
FORGIVE! FORGET NOT!
Dir. Pranay Limbu, Nepal 2007

Full marks to this film for successfully experimenting with film form and, in the process, enhancing the value of a content. The film is a classic example of a production with low financial input, where good ideas and strong commitment makes a very high emotional impact!

Audience Award
KRIPA
