Portraits of Nepal,
Kevin Bubriski

Bubriski’s work has been described as posing Nepalis “with antique formality, always facing the lens directly”. Obviously familiar with the country in which he lived for many years, Bubriski takes us beyond the Himalayan scenes stereotypical of Nepal, to life in remote villages.

Bubriski’s long-standing commitment to photographing the people and landscapes of Nepal continues the tradition of photographers of an earlier era, of exploring the limits of the known, both geographically, and culturally.

Bubriski has also taught at Williams College, Bennington College, and Harvard. In early 1997, he completed an MFA in New Media from Bennington College. He is currently working on documentary photography, video, and new media projects on topics ranging from Butoh dance in Japan, to Hindu ritual practice in India. Bubriski lives in Shaftesbury in Vermont, USA.

Kevin Bubriski’s photographs are in the permanent collections of the Muesum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the International Centre of Photography, all in New York. His work is also in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Yale University Gallery, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Centre for Creative Arts in Tuscon, and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. Bubriski has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Fulbright Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Asian Cultural Council.
